  1. That really is from the archives. The New Normal wouldn’t permit that crowd. Maybe there are advantages after all ….

    1. We spent an hour or so waiting for a clear shot! Every tour group in every language had to stop for the story, Margaret. They completely ignored the other Rembrandts in the same salon.

  2. Hi – you know I would wait ten hours to see this painting – and I can’t say that about many works – I love the shot of all the people – partly because as the first comment noted –
    We would not see that right now – but I also love people shots and you gave us a story here!

    1. We travelled halfway round the world to see that painting, Yvette. The detail is amazing – for example, the different hands of the father (one almost feminine, one masculine and wrinkled as you’d expect) and of the prodigal son’s footwear. Rembrandt’s interpretation goes way beyond the basic ‘story’ in the Bible! Interestingly, a year later, I saw a smaller reproduction in the Holy Trinity Church in Coventry, England!
