Sydney under smoke as fires rage

Thursday 5 December 2019, 6:30pm

A Jetstar A320 heads towards Sydney Airport through the murky sky. More than 10 fires are classed as extreme (red indicators on map). The closest to Sydney CBD are 50km north, 40km west and 60km south.

The cameras don’t depict the sun as red as the eye sees it, but the picture is similar. All the fires still burn, but have been downgraded. Dedicated fire crews, including from interstate and a contingent from Canada, fight to save properties.

The fires still burn – yellow markers signify “watch and act”, blue signify “under control”.

  1. We had the smoke for a while last weekend, but photos from Sydney show me how you all must be suffocating with it. Come back rain, we need you. (6 words)

    1. Our house isn’t airtight and tonight the wind from the east has brought the smoke. And fear with it. Hopefully not embers.

    1. Fortunately we are not on the edge of bush land, but we have many friends who are. Thank you for your thoughts, Margaret

  2. Thank you for this post. I am in Sydney as well and am constantly amazed and shocked by the severity of the smoke and the danger of the bushfires. I have recently published an article on my blog about the smoke in Sydney. If you have time, it would be great if you could read my post as I would be interested to hear your thoughts! Thanks 🙂

  3. The orange suns in orange skies are spooky, aren’t they? I saw the moon last week (the clouds and smoke parted long enough!) and it was also orange — not on the horizon, but overhead. Simply wrong.
